The chemical breakdown product of red blood cells that is normally removed by the liver and excreted in bile. Bilirubin can accumulate in the serum and lead to detectable jaundice when there is liver injury and dysfunction, obstruction to the flow of bile, or spontaneous red cell destruction (hemolysis).
