A downstream start codon is annotated for this CCDS representation based on strong conservation in a variety of mammalian species. It should be noted that an alternative upstream start codon, which would result in a protein that is 19 aa longer at the N-terminus, also exists. However, the upstream start codon is mouse-specific and has a weak Kozak signal. It is possible that the upstream start codon is used in mouse at least some of the time, while leaky scanning by ribosomes may allow downstream start codon use more of the time. There is no experimental evidence indicating which start codon is preferentially used in vivo. |
