The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja radiata) ranges throughout the continental margins of the North Atlantic Ocean, from South Carolina up to Labrador Northern Canada and Hudson Bay, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the English Channel.
More...The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja radiata) ranges throughout the continental margins of the North Atlantic Ocean, from South Carolina up to Labrador Northern Canada and Hudson Bay, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the English Channel. They live between 30 to 440 meters depth, but have been recorded down to 1400 meters. Historically the species has been fished throughout its range. However, numbers in the western North Atlantic have declined over the past four decades so much so that it is now listed as a "Species of Concern" in US waters. From an evolutionary perspective the Thorny skate is a member of the family rajidae commonly referred to as the "Hardnose Skates".
This assembly has been produced as part of the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing was conducted with PacBio long reads, Bionano optical maps, and 10X Genomics linked reads at the Rockefeller University Vertebrate Genomes Lab led by Olivier Fedrigo, HiC at Arima Genomics, and Illumina sequencing. Genome assembly was conducted by Arang Rhie and Olivier Fedrigo using the VGP 1.6 pipeline. The primary haplotype was assembled to chromosomes, whereas the alternate as contigs only.
