This two-part project was funded jointly through the U.S. Navy (Natural Resources Program) and the Smithsonian Institution (Global Genome Initiative) with principal goals to:
1. Provide two snapshot inventory lists of the biological diversity of Camp Lemonnier and adjacent areas in order to contribute to the Navy’s Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP), Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) Program, and to support health protection awareness for deployed personnel through vector surveillance and documentation.
2. Document species diversity by collecting and accurately identifying voucher specimens to be used in the molecular identification of wildlife strikes from the region in support of the Navy’s BASH mitigation efforts for Camp Lemonnier, and to enhance public research collections and genetic libraries.
