Description

Choloepus didactylus, commonly known as Linnaeus's two-toed sloth, is a native species from South America. Extant sloths are represented by only two genera, Choloepus and Bradypus, and present the slowest metabolism among all mammals. This sample was collected from a Tierpark Berlin male specimen known as Lama Su by researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, and is being used to generate the first chromosome level genome of a sloth for the G10K-VGP Project. This genome is also the first Pilosa and Xenarthra representative of Phase 1 of the VGP Ordinal Project.
