The lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) is a small falcon. This species breeds from the Mediterranean across Afghanistan and Central Asia, to China and Mongolia. It is a summer migrant, wintering in Africa and Pakistan and sometimes even to India and Iraq (source Wikipedia). This trio of samples was collected to create a high-quality reference genome for two haplotypes. The female offspring (bFalNau1) was collected from a nest, and blood samples of the parents also collected. Sample collection was conducted by Diego Rubolini at the Universita degli Studi di Milano, Italy. Coordination is by Rubolini and Tasos Buonas, and genome assembly Giulio Formenti, Erich and Olivier Fedrigo, at the Rockefeller University Vertebrate Genome Lab, as part of the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP).
