Is there a standing schedule for the release of the rsSNP build number?
No, there isn't a standing schedule for the release of dbSNP build numbers. The SNP development group creates a new build when a new genome build is available or when a sufficient amount of new data has been submitted. (10/18/05)
How often do you create new dbSNP builds?
There is no periodic schedule for fresh dbSNP builds. New dbSNP builds occur whenever any of the NCBI genome assemblies are updated (provided we have SNPs for that organism). We also update between genomic builds when there is a large submission of SNPs for a particular organism. We try to cluster and map all new submissions in any release, but sometimes time pressure prevents this.
How often is dbSNP data updated?
This depends on the genome build release. Thus far, it has been about every 1 to 2 months.
Why are the availability dates of SNP components on the web different than those on the summary page?
Availability dates for dbSNP components can be found on the summary page.
The discrepancies between dates listed on the web and those found on the summary page happen because dbSNP updates the web with a release date in advance of the actual release to make the data available as soon as they are ready. It takes several days to process large FTP files, so the actual release dates listed on the summary page are usually a few days behind the webpage date.
How do I get notification of new dbSNP build releases?
To get notification of build releases for the various species housed in dbSNP, subscribe to the dbsnp-announce list at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mailman/listinfo/dbsnp-announce
