Spanin, outer lipoprotein subunit T7-like virus This family contains members of the outer membrane spanin subunit protein (o-spanin), found in Bacteriophage T7. Spanins are lytic proteins that act on bacterial outer membrane by disrupting it, allowing progeny virions to spread. O-spanin acts together with inner membrane spanin subunit (i-spanin) to form the spanin complex necessary for function. The gene encoding this protein (Rz1-like o-spanin) is completely embedded in the longer gene for the Rz-like i-spanin subunit.
