Whole-blood samples from women exposed to hormone replacement therapy

(Submitter supplied) The American Women’s Health Initiative study published in July 2002 caused considerable concern among hormone replacement therapy (HRT) users and prescribers in many countries. This study is an exploratory research comparing the genome wide expression profile in whole blood samples according to HRT use. Within the Norwegian Women and Cancer study, 100 postmenopausal women (50 HRT users and 50 non-HRT users) born between 1943 and 1949 with normal to high body mass index and no other medication use were selected. more...

Expression data of skeletal muscle from HRT users and non-users

(Submitter supplied) Modification of Gene Expression of Skeletal Muscle in Response to postmenopause with or without Hormone Replacement Therapy. Even though menopause is often accompanied with first signs of age-associated changes in muscle structure and function, the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or menopause-related decline in estrogen production in the muscles of postmenopausal women is not well understood. more...

Skeletal muscles of postmenopausal women with and without hormone replacement

Analysis of skeletal muscles of postmenopausal women treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or with a placebo. Menopause is accompanied by age-associated changes in muscle structure and function. Results provide insight into the effect of HRT and estrogen deprivation on skeletal muscles.

Global gene expression profiles in skeletal muscle of monozygotic female twins discordant for hormone replacement therapy

(Submitter supplied) Analysis of gene expression profiles in skeletal muscle tissue after long-term use of HRT. Networks of enriched processes in skeletal muscle responding to long-term use of estrogen-based HRT in comparison with women without any HRT in a genetically controlled setting were contructed. The association between the expression of specific biological processes and muscle composition or performance was tested. more...

Monozygotic twins discordant for postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy: mid-part of vastus lateralis muscle

Analysis of skeletal muscle biopsies from monozygotic female twin pairs (55-62 years) discordant for estrogen-based, HRT (2-16 years). Results provide insight into molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of long-term HRT on skeletal muscle characteristics.

Systems epidemiology of blood transcriptome variability in a representative sample of postmenopausal women

(Submitter supplied) Using a large representative sample of postmenopausal women in the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) postgenome study, we investigated blood gene expression changes due to intra-technical variability, normal inter-individuality (age, body mass index, fasting status), and exposure variables (smoking, hormone therapy and medication use) at proportion and level of real life situation revealing mechanistic insights of these effects mirrored in blood.
