Impact of intestinal colonization and invasion on the Entamoeba histolytica transcriptome.

(Submitter supplied) A genome-wide transcriptional analysis of Entamoeba histolytica was performed on trophozoites isolated from the colon of six infected mice and from in vitro culture. Adaptation to the intestinal environment was accompanied by increases in a subset of cell signaling genes including transmembrane kinases, ras and rho family GTPases, and calcium binding proteins. The Effect of the Leptin Receptor Q223R Polymorphism on the Host Transcriptome Following Infection with E. histolytica.

(Submitter supplied) Resistance to amebiasis is associated with a polymorphism in the leptin receptor. Previous studies demonstrated that humans with the ancestral Q223 leptin receptor allele were nearly four times less likely to be infected with Entamoeba histolytica than those carrying the mutant R223 allele. Gut microbiome communication with the bone marrow regulates intestinal inflammation and susceptibility to amebiasis.

(Submitter supplied) We discovered that colonization of the gut with the human bile acid 7'-dehydroxylating bacteria Clostridia scindens provided immunity to the parasite E. histolytica in a murine model, increased granulocyte monocyte progenitors, and that adoptive marrow transplant from C. scindens colonized mice into naive mice could recapitualte this protection.
