  • gp24; os; structural virion protein; in bacteriophage T4 and related viruses, the virion is composed of head and tail components; capsid head is composed of gp24 pentamers, surrounded by hexamers of the major capsid protein, gp23; capsid head is assembled on an initiator complex of gp20; the gp22-gp21 scaffold and the gp23 capsid protein are assembled onto the initiator; after the scaffold is completely surrounded by gp23 and gp24, the T4 prohead protease, gp21, degrades the scaffold and cleaves most of the other head proteins, including gp23 and gp24, creating space in the cavity of the prohead
