The social amoeba
Dictyostelium discoideum is a soil-living protozoan that is capable of multicellular development. This process involves aggregation of free-living amoebae, which then organize into a relatively simple organism with a few different cell types. Coordinated cell-type differentiation and morphogenesis lead to a final fruiting body

The amoebae are easy to grow and have a rapid doubling time, allowing frequent harvesting for study. In addition, the simplicity of the life cycle facilitates mutant selection, where the distinct growth and development stages are easily switched using nutrient variation. The availability of biochemical and molecular genetics techniques has allowed the discovery of complex signaling networks, which are essential for Dictyostelium development and are also present in other organisms. The full characterization of the D. discoideum genome will provide further insights into the cell biology and development of this organism, and allow detailed physiological and evolutionary comparisons to other species.
