1.

25-hydroxycholesterol [Supplementary Concept]

Date introduced: January 1, 1974

2.

Sterols

Steroids with a hydroxyl group at C-3 and most of the skeleton of cholestane. Additional carbon atoms may be present in the side chain. (IUPAC Steroid Nomenclature, 1987)

3.

Steroids

A group of polycyclic compounds closely related biochemically to TERPENES. They include cholesterol, numerous hormones, precursors of certain vitamins, bile acids, alcohols (STEROLS), and certain natural drugs and poisons. Steroids have a common nucleus, a fused, reduced 17-carbon atom ring system, cyclopentanoperhydrophenanthrene. Most steroids also have two methyl groups and an aliphatic side-chain attached to the nucleus. (From Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary, 11th ed)

Year introduced: 1963

4.

Polycyclic Compounds

Compounds which contain two or more rings in their structure.

Year introduced: 2005(1974)

5.

Membrane Lipids

Lipids, predominantly phospholipids, cholesterol and small amounts of glycolipids found in membranes including cellular and intracellular membranes. These lipids may be arranged in bilayers in the membranes with integral proteins between the layers and peripheral proteins attached to the outside. Membrane lipids are required for active transport, several enzymatic activities and membrane formation.

Year introduced: 1977

6.

Lipids

A generic term for fats and lipoids, the alcohol-ether-soluble constituents of protoplasm, which are insoluble in water. They comprise the fats, fatty oils, essential oils, waxes, phospholipids, glycolipids, sulfolipids, aminolipids, chromolipids (lipochromes), and fatty acids. (Grant and Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)

Year introduced: /blood was BLOOD LIPIDS 1963-1967

7.

Hydroxycholesterols

Cholesterol which is substituted by a hydroxy group in any position.

Year introduced: 1978

8.

Cholesterol

The principal sterol of all higher animals, distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord, and in animal fats and oils.

Year introduced: /blood was BLOOD CHOLESTEROL 1963-1967

9.

Cholestenes

Steroids with methyl groups at C-10 and C-13 and a branched 8-carbon chain at C-17. Members include compounds with any degree of unsaturation; however, CHOLESTADIENES is available for derivatives containing two double bonds.

Year introduced: 1973

10.

Cholestanes

Derivatives of the saturated steroid cholestane with methyl groups at C-18 and C-19 and an iso-octyl side chain at C-17.

Year introduced: 1968

11.

Fused-Ring Compounds

Polycyclic compounds with adjacent rings that share the same two adjacent atoms.

Year introduced: 2017

12.

Oxysterols

Oxygenated derivatives of cholesterol or its sterol precursors. They are generated from sterol metabolism and the interaction of cholesterol with REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES.

Year introduced: 2017
