Study: Phylogenomics of the adaptive radiation of endangered Hawaiian tree snails (Achatinellidae)
show Abstracthide Abstract
Hawaiian tree snails (Achatinellidae: Achatinellinae) are found on five of the main Hawaiian Islands, with nearly 100 species historically occurring across dramatic environmental gradients. Today less than 30 of these species remain, due to habitat loss and predation by invasive species. In this study we utilized a genome-wide restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) approach to resolve evolutionary relationships in this classic adaptive species radiation. Results of this study are particularly important given the historic and recent extinction crisis in this subfamily, and will be used to guide decisions regarding translocation, captive rearing, and the maintaining evolutionary potential in the remaining species.
