The bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) is a very large bird of prey and the only member of the genus Gypaetus. Traditionally considered an Old World vulture, it actually forms a separate minor lineage of Accipitridae together with the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), its closest living relative (from Wkipedia entry). This genome is from a female collected by Tomas Marques-Bonet and Esther Lizano in Ainsa, Spain, and used to generate a high-quality reference for the Catalan Genome Project (CGP) and Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing was conducted at the Vertebrate Genome Lab at the Rockefeller University, and assembly conducted by Marc Palmada Flores, coordinated by Olivier Fedrigo, Erich Jarvis, and Tomas Marques-Bonet.
