Definition

The tympanic membrane (eardrum, myringa) is a thin, semitransparent, oval membrane, approximately 1 cm in diameter, that separates the external acoustic meatus from the tympanic cavity. Thickening refers to an increase of the dimension across the membrane. [from HPO]
