The effects of periodic restricted feeding on Rhesus Macaques

(Submitter supplied) Dietary restriction has shown benefits in physiological, metabolic, and molecular signatures associated with aging. In mice, periodic dietary restriction, that accompanies cyclical periods of reduced calories, mitigates aging phenotypes, yet the effects of this periodic restriction in higher order, genetically heterogenous mammals, have not been investigated. Reducing caloric intake in middle-aged Rhesus Macaques for four days followed by ad libitum eating for ten days, repeated for six cycles, led to significant changes in body composition, metabolome, and microbiome of the restricted monkeys compared to their ad libitum fed (age and sex matched) controls. more...

Interaction between the microbiome and the severity of diversion colitis after low anterior resection of rectal cancer

(Submitter supplied) Background:Diversion colitis (DC) is a non-specific inflammation in the intestinal mucosa with colonic dysfunction after low anterior resection of rectal cancer. It is newly proposed in recent years. With the gradual prolongation time of the ileostomy status, the condition of DC may become increasingly severe. However, the corresponding pathogenesis of DC has not been clarified yet. Methods:Clinical information were collected from patients with low rectal cancer admitted to the Department of Anorectal Surgery, Changzheng Hospital, from April 2017 to April 2019. more...

Is intestinal bacterial diversity enhanced by trans-species spread in the mixed-species flock of hooded crane (Grus monacha) and bean goose (Anser fabalis) wintering in the lower and middle Yangtze River floodplain?

(Submitter supplied) Illumina high-throughput sequencing was used to analyse the intestinal bacteria of these two species during different wintering periods at Shengjin Lake. We tested whether contact time enhances the trans-species spread of gut bacteria. Our results indicate that although intestinal microflora of hooded crane and the bean goose were different, direct or indirect contact in the mixed-species flock caused the spread of gut bacteria trans-species, and a very high proportion of common pathogens among these two hosts.

Detection of antibiotic resistance genes in human gut microbiota

(Submitter supplied) We used a DNA microarray chip covering 369 resistance types to investigate the relation of antibiotic resistance gene diversity with humans’ age. Metagenomic DNA from fecal samples of 123 healthy volunteers of four different age groups, i.e. pre-school Children (CH), School Children (SC), High School Students (HSS) and Adults (AD) were used for hybridization. The results showed that 80 different gene types were recovered from the 123 individuals gut microbiota, among which 25 were present in CH, 37 in SC, 58 in HSS and 72 in AD. more...

Metatranscriptomics provides insight into the physiologies of the digestive tract symbionts within the medicinal leech, Hirudo verbana

(Submitter supplied) Here, we report the use of Illumina RNA-Seq for investigating the physiology of the digestive-tract microbiome within the medicinal leech, Hirudo verbana. About 12 million cDNA reads were mapped against the genomes of the two dominant members of this simple microbiome. Results suggested that the most abundant, yet uncultured Rikenella-like bacterium forages host mucin glycans and ferments the carbohydrates to acetate that is secreted into the environment. more...
